We recently switched to Ikea curtains for our master bedroom. Last year we hang our curtain rods higher above the window trims to make the window look more prominent, and this made our old curtains come up super short. To switch out our short curtains, we purchased the velvet SANELA in gray for our bedroom in size 98 length all the curtains are size 54″ wide. The Ikea curtains are long!! They typically come in 98″ and 118″ compared to most big box store curtains like Target which are 84″ long.
CURTAINS BEFORE
As you can see, the curtains are draping on the floor, catching all of our dust and dirt. I did not want to shorten our curtains by completely cutting the extra material. Plus, I have ZERO sewing machine experience. So I then decided to try out Ikea hemming TAPE!
CURTAINS AFTER
ITEMS YOU WILL NEED1. Hemming tape – Here
2. Iron
3. Scissors
4. Tape measure
STEP ONE
Measure the length you would like to trim your curtain. You can do this in two ways; by either measuring from the bottom or the top of the curtain. When you measure from the bottom, you measure the access material you would like to trim. I measured from the top of the curtain itself (not the curtain ring) down to above our baseboards. STEP TWO
Lay down the curtain on the floor and measure again. Mine measured 87.5 inches.
If measured by the access material on the floor, mine measured 10 inches. So you fold your curtain by 10 inches.
My access material was 10 inches long, so then I placed my hemming tape 5 inches apart inside the folding.
STEP THREE
Use the iron and slowly iron over the hemming tape. Take your time here, and do not rush.
STEP FOUR
Once you iron the curtain, wait a few seconds for the tape to stick together and slowly pull an area of the curtain to see if the tape melted. It should look like this if the tape melted.
If you can see the tape once you pull a side of the curtain like this, follow steps three and four again.
FINAL STEP
Hang your curtain step back, and enjoy your view.
Love to hear if you tried the hem tape and any tips you have!
